Spontaneous meetups

Tell your friends where you're going and leave room for them to join

The snacks are packed and you’ve picked a playground. It would be nice to have company, but asking everyone when they’re free can take longer than getting out of the door. If you already have a plan, give friends something concrete to respond to. Here’s how one ordinary afternoon could work, with room for everyone’s plans to change.

Start with where you’re going

Imagine it’s half past two and you’re heading out at three. Instead of “Anyone free today?”, try “We’re going to the playground by the library around three and staying about an hour.” That gives friends a place, an approximate arrival and a sense of how much time there is. They can decide whether to join without settling one schedule for everyone. You can still have your afternoon if nobody is free.

Put your plan in Friendground

In Friendground, choose the playground and share that you’re going later, with your approximate time and length of stay. Already arrived? Share that you’re there now. Your confirmed friends can see the update. A friend who wants to join can choose their own arrival time with “We’re coming too”. Their visit stays their own: you haven’t booked them in or taken responsibility for when they get there.

Change your update when plans change

Suppose getting ready takes longer and three becomes a quarter past. Change your planned arrival so friends can check the latest time. If you’ve already arrived but need to leave earlier, end your status when you go. Your friend can still stay for their own visit. Updates also end automatically, so an old afternoon doesn’t keep looking current. There’s no need to explain a changed plan to every chat separately.

Ask about the details

A useful reply might be “Are you near the swings?” or “We can be there in twenty minutes — will you still be around?” Ask on the friend’s update you’re responding to, where the question has its context. Share only what you’re comfortable telling your friends. Friendground updates aren’t a public roll call of families at a playground, and sharing a visit doesn’t require adding anything about your children.

There's always more to catch up on

Bring Friendground along next time you head to the playground, and invite the friends you and the kids would love to see there.
